Recently, on an internet-age first date at the Met, I meditated with a man I just met on the value of scribbles. Posed in front of a Cy Twombley entitled “Dutch Interior,” I pointed to thin pencil marks on the imposing canvas, crayon scrawls and scratched-in numbers. He seemed less than impressed.

Today we’re celebrating portrait artist Alice Neel, on the anniversary of her death in 1984.
Alice Neel was an American visual artist known for her portraits of people around her, from close friends, family, lovers and colleagues to absolute strangers. I look forward to the Met Costume Institute exhibition every year. It springboards the fantastical costumes of that year’s Met Gala.
