AMPAS ’16: Lana and Lilly Wachowski

AMPAS ADDS WOMEN DIRECTORS: With our commitment to reviewing all new releases written and/or directed by women, FF2 Media now plays an important role in breaking down barriers. AMPAS invited 683 new members this year, 49 of whom are female directors. Who are they? What are their stories? We already know them, and we are here to tell you!

Lana and Lilly Wachowski are openly transgender American directors, screenwriters and producers known for The Matrix and its two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

Following the commercial success of The Matrix series, they wrote and produced the 2006 film V for Vendetta and followed with Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas. Their most recent works are the film Jupiter Ascending and the Netflix series Sense8, both of which debuted in 2015.

Excerpt of FF2 Media review of Jupiter Ascending from February 5, 2015:

The story begins with the origin of Jupiter, the girl named after the best, most glorious planet in the solar system. Before she was born, her father “Maximilian Jones” (James D’Arcy) and pregnant mother “Aleksa” (Maria Doyle Kennedy) were robbed, with the invaders destroying their apartment and taking their money – and their telescope. Maximilian fails “Mugging Protocol 101” by not letting go of his telescope and BOOM. Down goes Mr. Jones.
